Charlotte Bronte (1816-1855)

• Attended Cowan Bridge boarding school with three of her four sisters in 1824 (became a model for Lowood).
• Sisters Maria and Elizabeth died there (of typhoid).
• Charlotte and Emily came home and were educated (along with their sister Anne and brother Branwell) by their father.
• Charlotte and her sister wanted to start a school, so Charlotte went to school to learn how and ended up falling in love with the director of the school. She had to leave and he never wrote her.
• Charlotte and her sisters took male pen names before publishing a collection of poems
• By 1849 Charlotte was the only sibling still alive.
• Jane Eyre is considered a “female bildungsroman”

Think about the way this information connects with the novel overall and how it lends insight into what we’ve discussed.
